Slow Burn: Why We Can’t Quit Coal

Coal should have been yesterday’s fuel. Yet global coal emissions keep rising, new plants are still being built, and political battles around coal can make or break national climate plans.

Earth Set brings together two sharp, globally minded voices — writer, and advisor on energy and infrastructure investments at Gordon Management Lucy Shaw, and China and energy policy expert + Associate Fellow at Chatham House, Sam Geall — to unravel why coal remains so entrenched, what’s changing, and what a just and lasting transition would really require.

Expect a clear, unsentimental look at the economics, communities and geopolitics that make coal so hard to kill — and a conversation that cuts through the clichés.

📍 Location: Octopus HQ, UK House, 2 Great Titchfield St., London W1D 1NN
    🕡 Time: 6:30–9:00pm (inc. drinks + nibbles)

Sink or Swim with Dr Susannah Fisher

A new kind of Earth Set gathering: small, thoughtful dinners with authors whose ideas shape how we think about climate, society, and the future.

Next up: Dr Susannah Fisher, adaptation expert and author of Sink or Swim, joins us for a curated supper conversation on what resilience really looks like — the lived experience of climate impacts, why adaptation so often falters, and what fair, effective change might require.

    Expect:
🍽️ Dinner, wine, and lively discussion around one table
📖 Insightful conversation directly with the author
💬 A small group of 10–14 people for a genuine exchange of ideas

Numbers are limited — this is a supper table, not a ballroom.

🎟️ Reserve your place for free (final dinner cost ~£70, collected once numbers are confirmed)
📚 Please read Sink or Swim in advance — available via the Earth Set Bookshop (supports independent bookshops)

Come ready to read, think, and talk.
