Carbon Removal for Sale: What’s Real, What’s Hype, and Who Pays?

Carbon removal is no longer a distant or speculative idea — it is already being bought and sold. From biochar and enhanced weathering to direct air capture and ocean-based approaches, a growing number of platforms now offer individuals, companies and governments the chance to “remove” emissions.

But what is actually available today? At what price, in what units, and with what confidence? How do we distinguish rigorous, durable carbon removals from weak offsets and marketing claims? And as these markets develop, who should ultimately foot the bill — consumers, corporates, or the state?

For March’s Earth Set event, we’ll bring together voices from across climate policy, science, finance and industry to explore the fast-emerging carbon removal market: where innovation is genuinely happening, where the risks and uncertainties lie, and how this space is likely to evolve over the coming decade.

This will be a moderated, high-signal evening conversation, designed for investors, practitioners and policymakers grappling with carbon removal not as a theory, but as a real and growing part of the climate landscape.

This event is supported by Clean Air Task Force (CATF) , a global, non-ideological climate organisation focused on accelerating the development and deployment of low-carbon energy and other climate-protecting technologies.

📍 Location: Ohme offices, 5th Floor, Wellington House, 125–130 Strand, London WC2R 0AP
🕡 Time: 6.30-9.00 pm (panel discussion 7.00-8.00pm followed by drinks & nibbles)

Bookclub: Volt Rush with Henry Sanderson

Earth Set Bookclub returns with a dinner-table conversation on one of the least visible, and most consequential, dimensions of the clean energy transition: the global race for critical minerals.

We’ll be joined by Henry Sanderson, author of Volt Rush, a deeply reported investigation into the scramble for lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earths that underpin electrification, renewables and industrial decarbonisation.

As governments and companies rush to secure supply chains, Volt Rush traces how mineral dependence is reshaping geopolitics, trade and power — from China’s industrial strategy to Western policy blind spots, and from resource nationalism to new forms of extraction risk. The book asks hard questions about who benefits from the transition, who bears the costs, and whether today’s green ambitions risk reproducing old extractive patterns.

The conversation will be moderated by Lucy Shaw and, as with all Earth Set Bookclub evenings, will be informal, rigorous and discussion-led, closer to a long dinner conversation than a stage event.

    📍 Location: Cote Brasserie, 6-8 St. Christopher’s Place, London W1U 1ND
    🕡 Time: 7.00-10.00pm - dinner included
🎟️ Tickets: Details coming soon - 14 seats only available

We recommend reading the book in advance - it’s available on the Earth Set Bookshop
